What a stunning location!!! We stayed at Waterside House (aka Waterside Farm) campsite, Pooley Bridge. The site is right on the shore of Ullswater and just a one mile walk along a lakeside path to the village. Everything you need is on the site anyway though - a cafe doing fish and chips on Friday, pizza another couple of nights and all sorts of food anytime. There's also an on-site watersports hire centre - Wake and Surf - for canoes/kayaks and paddleboards. We'd never heard of wake surfing. It's like wakeboarding, but they can let the line go slack. Advanced wakesurfers can even let go of the tow rope and continue surfing in the boat wake. Norbert can tell you all about it, having had a one hour lesson!

Some wind would have been nice for our weekend away. Alas, that was the only thing missing! It was just Force 2 from Friday to Sunday. Don't those conditions normally come with warm weather and sun? Maybe, except in the Lakes! We had to be satisfied with cloudy, 15C on Friday, then cooler over the weekend with a bit of very light rain. In mid-July?! Dave took a raceboard and a club wind-SUP, Brian a sit-on kayak, Norbert some big windsurf kit and John ... a mountain bike. The photos below include the site, activities available from it, dinghy sailing from the adjacent club and some views from a mountain bike ride between High Street and Ullswater. One photo shows a Duotone inflatable windsurf rig with no boom or mast. That's probably a great, lightweight option for beginners ... and very portable too!

When will Summer start? That's what we're all asking isn't it, except maybe Mark who wore a shortie anyway? Just 12C when I got to the Club. Thankfully, the sun made an appearance soon after and the day finished on 15C. Should we be glad of 15C in July?! The wind was good and xcweather continues to get the forecast right - strong Force 4 from mid-afternoon (a bit less in the photos). The 10 members windsurfing and wingfoiling made the most of it. Gabby was gybing proficiently, Geoff looks so nearly there and Norbert is getting up on the foil a bit. The windsurfers managed some nice gybes and good speed too. The only negative was the mobile phone which was lost without trace in the reservoir despite a great deal of searching!

This year the club is offering subsidised coaching / instruction for members ....

First up we have Wing Foil coaching for improvers / intermediates on Saturday 11th or Sunday 12th May (confirmed a few days before). The coaching is open to anyone who has prior experience and is comfortable using foiling kit (not necessarily on the foil) at one of the following levels:

  • Taxiing, but looking to get first flights.
  • Have achieved first flights, but looking for sustained flights and developing skills for staying upwind.
  • Comfortable on the foil and able to keep upwind, working on improved riding, gybes, toeside and beyond.

Times are TBC depending on demand and the levels of people wanting to take part, but will likely be a morning and afternoon session. The cost will be £35 per session for those who can keep upwind on the foil, £50 for those not able to keep upwind on foil (price difference is because of the different instructor / participant ratios required).

If you’d like to take part, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ASAP with your current foiling level.

We’ll be offering other sessions in year, full details TBC, but watch out for:

  • Intro to winging in August - no experience needed, a great intro to the sport if you want to find out what all the hype is about.
  • Windsurf coaching in June and September.
  • Windfoil coaching - proving slightly harder to find instruction, but we’re working on it.
