Jennie Roberts - Foiling 25th June
Words and photos by John Lymer (next time I'll bring the better camera!)
It was close to 30C, so great to be on the water in just a rash vest and board shorts. Not crowded either - just me and Jennie. I was going nicely with an 8.5m sail and a wide board, but fairly pedestrian compared to Jennie who gave a very impressive demonstration of foiling. This was the first time I'd seen it done at Watergrove. Jennie has been racing the Olympic class RS:X board until this year, but foilboarding will replace RS:X at the 2024/5 Olympics so it's a time of transition for many athletes. Jennie only started foiling in January and just before lockdown spent 3 months training in Portugal with the British Team being formed for this emerging sport. In normal times she also trains at Weymouth with the rest of the team. She already looks very experienced as she kept the board 'flying' for most gybes. It was made to look easy, but I'm sure it's not!
